Sine die: Here’s what happened on Veto Day

What a night. Here’s what happened on Veto Day:
Lawmakers overturned 15 of the 48 vetoes issues by Republican Gov. Paul LePage in the past two weeks, including the one that sought to torpedo the more than $30 million bipartisan budget fix. Later, procedural drama reigned over a vote on whether override the veto of a bill to expand access to family planning services for low-income women. The veto was ultimately sustained.

But the what kept lawmakers here until after Midnight was the issue of two bills proposed by LePage at the last minute.

Members of the budget-writing Appropriation Committee worked for hours on the bills, and were near a compromise when they got word that the governor intended to veto anything that deviated from his original proposal. So leaders from both parties decided to pull the plug on the bills and call it a night.

Not long after that, the Legislature adjourned. Unless something unpredictable happens, the Legislature will not convene again until after the November elections.
If you want to relive the exciting night as it happened — and who wouldn’t? — check out the archive of the live updates below, presented in chronological order.
